Local businesses hire me to tour prospective employees, show them the area, what’s available, what’s interesting about Elko, activities for kids (Boys and Girls club, sports, music, schools), shopping, real estate, outdoor adventure. I enjoy customizing tours according to people’s interests and life styles. July 18, 2015, I toured Brenda and Ed Johnson around Elko [read more…]

Cowboy John Elko Tour With Mike Ostler
Guests driving from Salt Lake City to Reno, wonder what could possibly be interesting in small-town Elko. There’s nothing flat, lifeless, dry brush, and boredom when Nevada is seen from the freeway. Why would anyone want to live here? Why would anyone want to visit? There’s obviously nothing to do here! But, July 14, I [read more…]
Ruby Mountain Hike
I shuttled Kathryn and Chuck to Harrison Pass July 3, for their hike in the Ruby Mountains. The following Monday they told us about their adventure! “We ran into a hail/rain/lightening storm with heavy winds just as we reached the hike down into Overland Lake. Thank God for the shelter of the cabin as we were [read more…]
Joe and Mark’s Ruby Crest Trail Hike
I shuttled Joe from Alaska, and Mark from Reno to Harrison Pass for their Ruby Crest Trail hike. Experienced backpackers they planned a full week for the hike, with the intent of enjoying the flora and fauna on their way. The Ruby Mountains are part of Nevada’s “basin and range” topography: mountain ranges separated by wide sagebrush basins. Mountain ranges [read more…]

Harrison Hike
Cowboy John Tours operates a shuttle service for the Ruby Crest Trail, in the northeastern Nevada’s Ruby Mountains. June 11 I drove a gentleman from Indiana, and his two sons, to Harrison for the hike. That was a Thursday, and Saturday Blake called (some how got cell service on top!) asking me to pick them up back at Harrison Pass, the [read more…]
Cowboy Country Tour
At the request of the Elko Convention Center and Nevada’s Commission on Tourism I toured French journalist Aliette de Crozet, through “Cowboy Country” June 9 and 10. The tour began at the Western Folklife Center’s Black Box theater with the beautiful short, “Why the Cowboy Sings,” and the Baja Cowboy exhibit in the gallery. The California Trail Center, Thomas Canyon and Lamoille were next [read more…]
Trail Days
I spent May 30-31, 2015, at the 12th reenactment of the massive immigration of pioneers who walked across Nevada from St. Louis, Missouri to settle in California in the late 1800’s. The California Trail Interpretive Center, outside Elko, NV, was filled to overflowing inside and out with black powder demos, Dutch oven cooking, women in bonnets and calico dresses, men in [read more…]
Cinco De Mayo Parade Elko Nevada
Cinco De Mayo parade, early May in Elko was fantastic, perhaps the best parade in Elko because of the horses, families, children’s dance costumes, live dancing, and music. I usually watches the horses, and there were beauties this year with great costumes. Excellent riders and wonderful horses. Cowboy John Be Sociable, Share!
Cowboy John Tour with Dr. and Mrs. Gabel
I toured Dr. and Mrs. Gabel and two young children May 10, Sunday around Elko proper and Spring Creek and into Thomas Canyon, for Reno Diagnostic Center. The family is a camping family (tents!) so they enjoyed seeing the rugged beauty of the Ruby Mountains outside Elko. I am available for business tours as well as [read more…]
