Guests driving from Salt Lake City to Reno, wonder what could possibly be interesting in small-town Elko. There’s nothing flat, lifeless, dry brush, and boredom when Nevada is seen from the freeway. Why would anyone want to live here? Why would anyone want to visit? There’s obviously nothing to do here!
But, July 14, I had a chance to do my favorite thing: showcase small town, Elko. What is there to do in Elko? There’s plenty to do in Elko!
Mike Ostler of SkyWest Airlines and I crammed into one day tours of the California Trail Center, Western Folklife Center, Northeastern Nevada Museum, Elko City offices, Elko Convention Center, lunch, deer in Lamoille and the Ruby Mountains!
To say Mr. Ostler was amazed would be an understatement. The variety in our small town surprised him, and our Ruby Mountains finished the job! Camping, hiking, and picnic tables, meadows dotted with wildflowers and beaver dams, clear crystal streams, fresh cool air, awesome views, and jagged granite peaks within half an hour from town. He left obviously impressed, determined to return.
