Mid 2017 Cowboy John toured the crew of Discovery Road, Utah along the California Trail as they documented the journey of 1880s gold seekers heading to California. At Mound Valley one-room schoolhouse in Lee, Nevada, James Nelson and the crew treated the children to a drone flight over the school before they left to film Nelson hiking in actual ruts left by prairie schooners through Nevada.
A highlight for the crew was a visit to the California Trail Interpretive Center just outside Elko in northeastern Nevada. East-facing windows in the Center look out on the “V” in the hills through which the Donner Party emerged from their supposed “detour” to California on the Hastings Cutoff.
